Project Timeline

The Problem

Medication ordering and delivery processes are tedious and confusing.

Pharmacies across the country employ different methods of handling medication orders. Customers, especially those managing multiple prescriptions, face anxiety and challenges when dealing with various platforms and touchpoints.

The Solution

A reliable pharmacy app that streamlines medication order and management processes.

Rapid Research | Competitive Analysis

Pharmacy apps are packed with many features, causing cognitive overload and reduced usability.

Commonly used pharmacy apps display 3-6 services for each page. The overwhelming amount of information and buttons on each screen makes it difficult to navigate simple processes such as prescription renewals.

Rapid Research | User Interview

Through conducting semi-structured interviews with participants with experience managing prescriptions, I found that patients have difficulty tracking their medication refills and deliveries, causing them to worry about running out of medication. I noted that pharmacy inaccurate and inconsistent notifications create more anxiety and a general distrust of pharmacy services.

Inefficient and Inconsistent Medication Ordering and Tracking Procedures

The most prevalent concerns are the unreliable and slow tracking, notifications, medication management, and assistance of the pharmacy service. Thus, we decided to focus on eliminating frustrations and anxiety that occur during the renewal and tracking stages.

Problem Statement

Design | User Flow

Intuitive Tracker with Consistent Reminders & Automatic Prescription Management

To focus on streamlining the renewal and order process, we developed a user flow diagram that highlights the key features and steps for placing order, renewing prescriptions, and tracking medication delivery status.

Design | Low-Fidelity Wireframes

Enabling Medication Delivery Status Tracking

During our parallel wireframing session, we each create the main pages (medication, home, order, and order details page) of the mobile app. I decided on a high-level dashboard on the homepage to display upcoming refills and current medication information.

Design | Mid-Fidelity Wireframes

Providing Medication Management for Multiple Orders

After conducting another think-aloud user test, we found that users, especially caregivers responsible for others’ medication, had difficulty keeping track of the deliveries, refills, and orders. To address this, we added different profiles, allowing the primary caregiver to toggle and manage others’ medications.

Having experience designing and implementing responsive apps, I suggested using a sidebar for easy navigation and modules for each sub-page. To prevent inconsistent layout, I placed the modules horizontally and stacked them on top of each other when the screen size is reduced to certain thresholds.

Design | High-Fidelity Prototype

Enabling Users to Access Pharmacy Services with a Simple Interface

We decided on a blue-based color scheme and fonts to set a welcoming and trustworthy tone. For our logo, we combined the pill illustration with a fresh arrow to reinforce the motif of personal tracking.

For the final high-fidelity prototype, I tweaked some minor issues mentioned during the in-class critiques. I also created a detailed cart and checkout flow that would better demonstrate the entire medication order flow.

Track and Renew Medication on the Go

1. View the medication delivery status with a progress bar

2. Receive reminders for upcoming refills

3. Clarify questions with provided chatbox

Manage Multiple Medications with Integrated Profiles

1. Switch between accounts to track medication for family members

2. Record medication intake with a checklist

3. View intake schedule on the calendar

View Detailed Statistics

1. See a summary of medication intake, order, and delivery on the website

2. View payment history without needing to call insurance

Final Prototype

A reliable, intuitive pharmacy app that eliminates uncertainty and tedious medication management processes.
